THE CAT BEHIND THE TICKER

Okay, who is this little guy?

Keyboard Cat began with Charlie Schmidt’s 1984 footage of Fatso. Schmidt uploaded it in 2007; the Play Him Off remixes spread in 2009. Bento and Skinny later carried on the character. The Base token project’s licensing statement is a separate claim from this documented video history.

WHY THIS CAT STUCK

A punchline people knew before Base existed.

Keyboard Cat supplies the ending to someone else’s disaster: cue Fatso at the keys and play them off. The 1984 footage, 2007 upload and 2009 mashups give that joke a history people can actually trace. Our read: recognition is Keycat’s strongest cultural asset.
